The EUscreen community has spoken! The results from our video competition are in.

Two weeks ago we gave you the opportunity to help us curate this collection, and we’re happy to say that many of you answered our call. In their selection the jury has emphasized originality and a personal connection. So without further ado – we’re proud to present the 12 winners of our competition, and the 12 favorite EUscreen videos of your choice:

Congratulations to all – and a big thank you to everyone who participated!

Musical Fashion Commercial 1968

“This Czech commercial is just so wonderfully awkward! The singers are stiff and out of place, singing a childish song, (additionally, for us Poles, Czech language has a cute, funny, melody to it). The models (on a horribly arranged beach!) are more like fish caught in the net – missing sun, air and water, laying on the concrete floor, cold and waiting for it to finish. Like a dad on some sort of a school celebration, performing with his kid in front of everyone, or your elderly aunt, wearing a see-through blouse on a christmas eve, kinda thing – your gotta be amused and embarrassed at the same time!” – by Zofia Chabiera

CT / Czech Republic, 1968 [01:00]

Union of Romanian Principalities

“I like this video because it’s a piece of history. Of my country and especially of my city, Iasi. I would project it to politicians every time they come to Iasi to bore us to death with speeches written by conceited counsellors. It has some of the “European value” in trend now. I mean it speaks highly of unity not only inside one country but also between countries. It emphasises the “communication” between brilliant minds (in a time where news were literally travelling) and the vision and will it takes to achieve something great. I find it cool also because it’s older than me – and I’m no teenager.” – by Raluca Filip

TVR / Romania, 1972 [03:18]

Silk worms

“I propose this video because it could enrich my short mystery movie, The Mulberry Affair, which mashes up videos, images and historical records under public domain or Creative Commons license from Europeana. The movie is an experiment for creative storytelling on archive sources re-use: a mockumentary about the fascinating history (true and false) of the mulberry tree, silk production and more. My choice is just to point out how every source, apparently insignificant, can become a valuable document and generate something new.” – by Raffaella Marandola

TVR / Romania, 1974 [00:34]

Interview with Jurgis Kunčinas

“It is an interview by Deutsche Welle with Jurgis Kunčinas, a Lithuanian author at the Frankfurt book fair in 2002. Kunčinas died shortly afterwards. The presenter Klaus Nothnagel shortly afterwards had to leave Deutsche Welle for very funny/silly reasons.” – by Stephan Lamm

Deutsche Welle / Germany, 2002 [02:24]

Pop Culture Cheat Sheet

“I’m interested in European animation because it has a different style to American and Japanese, with which I grew up. I’ve found old European animations such as Gustavus from Hungary and now this contemporary piece from Poland. I’m glad that there are contemporary European animations available on EUscreen and the music is a plus. :)” – by Bram Wasito

NINA / Poland, 2013 [51:25]

Viennese Schnitzel

“This video shows how to cook a traditional Viennese Schnitzel. It is the favourite clip of my colleague Michael Vielhaber and he celebrated his 40th birthday last week. It is a kind of birthday present for him. :-)” – by Kathrin Funk

ORF / Austria, 1959 [04:16]

Lluís Llach – live at Camp Nou

“I like this video because it reminds me of a great event that took place in Barcelona 30 years ago. Lluís Llach sang at the Barça Stadium (Camp Nou) in front of 100 000 people. It was an exciting unforgettable night.” – by M. Assumpció Surrell

TVC / Spain, 1985 [39:44]

Unanswered Questions

“It is amazing how biased information can be. How powerful governments are, indeed they can change reality and citizens can be manipulated. The more information we have access to, the less accurate it turns out to be.” – by Antoni Joan Perez Tena

TVC / Spain, 2004 [57:38]

Portrait of Barcelona

“Barcelona is the city where I live and that I love. I like this particular footage because of it, and because it is a great opportunity to see a particular moment of our recent history when there were a lot of changes in the city (because of the Olympic games preparations) and from a point of view of a foreign broadcaster, which is always more objective than a local one.” – by Xavier Vives

Deutsche Welle / Germany, 1991 [08:33]

U2 at Slane Castle

“I have a friend who was at this event more than 15 years ago and it was interesting to follow the reportage from there. U2 is one of my favourite groups.” – by Krassimira Dimitrova

RTÉ / Ireland, 2001 [01:42]

Catalonia’s National Holiday

“This video explains one of the most important parts of Catalan history, and why the eleventh of September is our national day in Catalonia.” – by Marc Perez

TVC / Spain, 1983 [04:40]

Mothers’ Day

“Although it has sinister undertones (Vichy regime celebrating national motherhood) this is also a fascinating glimpse back to a time when children were well-behaved, charming, responsive and free from digital devices!” – by Chris Holme

INA / France, 1944 [00:57]
