SEAPAVAA Conference and General Assembly

The social and political construction of memory has been constantly shaped by society and the rapid development of technology. History, in the conventional sense, is a record of past events. Though memory and history are not identical, both often exist in a tense yet dynamic relationship with each another. Audiovisual archives, and to a greater extent the field of archiving, are challenged to navigate this tension and dynamism through its principles, advocacies, and practices in order to position themselves as a bridge between memory and history.

In 2019, the 23rd SEAPAVAA Conference and General Assembly will be happening from the 25th to the 30th of June in Noumea, New Caledonia. This SEAPAVAA Conference will explore the theme of “Memory, History, and Archives”. As with past conferences, the event will provide the platform for like-minded individuals and institutions to engage with one another, share knowledge and exchange ideas, and address challenges and issues within the field of audiovisual archives in particular as well as the larger field of archives.

The Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA) is an association of organizations and individuals involved in the development of audiovisual archiving in Southeast Asia and the Pacific as to preserve and provide access to the region’s rich audiovisual heritage.
