FRAME is a training course on new technologies applied to the restoration, digitization, preservation and use of audiovisual and cinematographic archives.

The 2015 edition of the FRAME seminar, dedicated to European and non European professionals of the media industry, will take place in June and October, hosted by Ina EXPERT in partnership with EBU, FIAT/IFTA and Creative Europe.

In a fast and ever moving technological world, the management of audiovisual content evolves: digitization of analogue contents, long term preservation of born digital contents, description, accessibility through innovative ways of delivery and promotion are key issues. The FRAME training addresses, in 2 sessions, each step of the management of these contents.

The seminar is tailored to European and non-European professionals working in the field of audiovisual heritage and content management and allows for 15 participants per session.

EUscreenXL at the Gothenburg Book Fair

EUscreenXL will participate in the Gothenburg Book Fair on 25-28 September. The book fair is Scandinavia’s top literature event with circa 800 exhibitors and 100 000 visitors. For the second year running the book fair sets the stage for a feature called “The Digital Square”. Here organisations presents work aimed at digital access. This year the National Library of Sweden (KB) has joined forces and booth with the Swedish Film Institute (SFI) and Swedish Television (SVT) to showcase their various projects. KB as a partner of EUscreenXL is highlighting this project.

During the fair’s four days the public and professionals will be able to hands on look at the EUscreen portal as well to be able to discuss its aims and goals. On Friday morning a seminar will be dedicated to discuss user expectations on digital archives and EUscreenXL in particular.

If you are visiting Gothenburg pass by the booth! Take part of a competition hosted by Swedish Television, listen to panel discussions or just relax in our comfortable sofa with a programme from one of the participating archives/broadcasters in EUscreenXL (tablets will be available for loan). You can also join us for our reception on Thursday afternoon.

IAMHIST master class on Media and History

Are you a graduate or doctoral student, post-doc, or young professional currently working on a project in which you engage issues concerning historical film, radio or television or issues in media history? Are you interested in presenting your project to a small group of experts and peers? Then this master-class of the International Association for Media and History may be just what you are looking for. Participants are expected to give a short introduction to their project and to prepare some central questions for discussion. Senior members of IAMHIST will engage with your paper and discuss sources and strategies for developing the project.

The day is designed to be a networking event for emerging scholars and media professionals and an opportunity to engage with leaders in the field in a less formal setting than an academic conference. There is no charge for attendance and lunch is included.

IAMHIST organizes bi-annual conferences and publishes the “Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television”, which examines the history of audio-visual media and its impact on political, social and cultural developments.

FIAT/IFTA Announces Seminar on Television Documentary

The FIAT/IFTA Television Studies Commission will organise a two-day seminar, entirely devoted to Television Documentary, hosted by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision at Hilversum.

On the first day 13th March 2014, former and current practitioners will discuss their work in a witness seminar and extracts from their work will be screened.

The second day will be open for presentations of scholarly work on any aspect of television documentary, its history, practice, and aesthetics. Comparative studies are particularly welcome. Scholars are invited to send in their 250-word abstracts and a short biography by December 1st, 2013.

The Seminar language will be English. We are asking participating FIAT/IFTA member archives to provide research facilities and extracts free of charge to candidates whose abstracts are selected.

Initial enquiries should be made to the appropriate member of the Television Studies Commission and completed proposals sent to the same person by 1st December 2013.

Metadata as the Cornerstone of Digital Archiving

The International Federation of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA)’s Media Management Commission organises an international seminar on metadata and it’s significance for digital AV-archiving on the 16th and 17th of May 2013 at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision  in Hilversum.

Since 1997, the Media Management Commission of FIAT-IFTA has organised a series of seminars for AV-documentalists, archive policy-advisers, middle management and staff. The main theme of these seminars is always: the consequences of the technological developments for the work of moving image and sound archivists. This year, the MMC dedicates its 6th Seminar in the serial Changing Sceneries, Changing Roles entirely to the phenomenon of metadata and its increased significance to access, collection management and the preservation of AV-collections.

In digital archiving, the concept of metadata is crucial. Only with the help of metadata can archives make their treasures accessible to users: metadata is capable of linking the contents of many different collections, forming a huge worldwide (or, in the case of EUscreen: European-wide) network of online sound and images. Ingesting, managing and preserving the rapidly growing amount of digital files in each individual archive would be impossible without the controlling power of standardised metadata.

Programme

The two days of the seminar will be divided into four sessions that each consist of a keynote address, two to three case studies/concrete projects and panel discussions. The four types of metadata developments that will be addressed in the four sessions are:

  1. Automatically generated metadata (keynote: Cees Snoek , computer scientist at the University of Amsterdam who leads a research team working on the development of a smart search engine for digital video: the Media Mill Semantic Video Search Engine)
  2. Linked (meta)data (keynote: Seth van Hooland, who holds the chair at the Digital Information and Communication Science Department of the Université Libre de Bruxelles)
  3. Preservation metadata (keynote:  Rebecca Guenther, who works at the Library of Congress and is currently the worlds leading authority on Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies or PREMIS)
  4. User-generated metadata (keynote: Lora Aroyo, associate professor Intelligent Information Systems at the Web and Media Department of  Computer Science at the VU University Amsterdam)

While the  keynote speakers will explore these areas, archive-practitioners from prestigious broadcasters and institutions will present how they collect, create and employ metadata in new and/or digital ways. Every session is evaluated by way of discussions between a variety of AV-experts, focusing on the professional impact of the presented views and developments.

Workshop: Public Service Broadcasting in Europe in the Digital Age

The workshop investigates convergence in the regulation of public service broadcasting in Europe in a comparative context. The focus is the European Commission’s role in policy transfer in particular given that Member States have to clarify the subsidy of public service broadcasting (psb) under state aid rules. We shall be looking at general definitions of public service broadcasting, examining the European Commission’s interpretation of these (and whether the UK model is being drawn upon as a benchmark), and implementation in the different national contexts.

New AV Competence Centre will launch during Screening the Future 2011 Conference

The new AV Competence Centre  ― entitled PrestoCentre ― is a membership driven, non-profit organisation that will serve stakeholders in audiovisual digitisation and digital preservation in Europe. It will continue and expand the work of the EU-funded ‘Presto’ projects and will launch at the Screening the Future Conference in Amsterdam on 14 & 15 March 2011.

The conference will connect small and large archives, service providers, vendors, funders, policymakers and educators developing solutions to the most urgent questions facing audiovisual archiving. AV stakeholders in Europe and beyond are invited to attend the conference and to join the celebration of the launch of PrestoCentre.
