The TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology is the German National Library of Science and Technology and provides academia, research and business with literature and information. Its remit is to preserve recorded knowledge and to provide the latest information. TIB’s Lab Non-Textual Material analyzes user needs and requirements regarding discoverability, citation and reuse of scientific videos, 3D models, images, graphics, research data and software. Based on these requirements, user-centered services, tools and infrastructures are developed in close cooperation with the scientific communities. One of those tools and infrastructures is the AV-Portal.
The TIB AV-Portal is a web-based platform for quality-tested scientific videos. The portal offers an innovative and reliable infrastructure to make audio-visual materials from research and education accessible. Semantic technologies as well as speech, text, and image recognition methods improve the findability of the materials through content-based search options. By assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) and ensuring they can be detected and accessed, TIB safeguards the quality, long-term availability and referenceability of audio-visual media.
The TIB provides the films and metadata of the former IWF Wissen und Medien in the TIB AV Portal. The media stock was transferred to TIB in November 2012. With more than 10,000 films from 100 years, the institute had one of the world’s largest collections of scientific films.
